Prime Video has cancelled the television series My Lady Jane after its first season despite positive reviews and a growing fan base.
The show, released on Prime Video on June 27, received praise for its unique plot and character chemistry. Fans expressed disappointment and frustration over the cancellation, citing the show’s potential for further development and the lack of promotion it received.
Why did Prime Video Cancelled My Lady Jane?
As reported by Deadline, the series garnered great reviews despite its unconventional mix of genres—historical romance, fantasy, adventure, comedy, and farce. However, it failed to attract a large audience and never reached Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings for original shows.
Gemma Burgess adapted the 2016 YA historical fiction novels into the series My Lady Jane, taking an alternate history approach to the story of Lady Jane Grey, the 16th-century monarch with the shortest rule. The show combines palace intrigue with a fantastical portrayal of class divisions in a society where Ethians, humans with the ability to transform into animals, are shunned by the ruling Verity humans.
The first season concludes with a hint of what’s to come and a narrator teasing that “our story is not over yet.” The central couple, Lady Jane Grey (played by Emily Bader) and Lord Guildford Dudley (played by Edward Bluemel), are given a satisfying happily-ever-after ending to their love story.
The star-studded cast includes Anna Chancellor, Rob Brydon, Jordan Peters, Kate O’Flynn, Abbie Hern, Henry Ashton, Dominic Cooper, and Jim Broadbent.
Gemma Burgess and Meredith Glynn co-created and produced the series. Jamie Babbit directed five of the eight episodes and served as producing director/executive producer. Sarah Bradshaw and Laurie MacDonald were among the executive producers.
Viewers have initiated a campaign to save the series, including calls for petitions and explanations from Prime Video.
